Dr Deon Doubell obtained a medical qualification at the University of Stellenbosch after completing his schooling in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and a subsequent period of Military Training. He worked as a general practitioner in Uitenhage, South Africa for 7 years during which time he gave anaesthetics for up to 20 cases per week.

Dr Doubell subsequently qualified as an ophthalmologist at the University of Stellenbosch and has since 1990, attended an average of 3 conferences a year, obtaining further experience and ongoing knowledge in all aspects of ophthalmology.

His great passion and interest lies in retinal surgery and as such has completed several courses in ophthalmic surgery covering mostly retinal- and cataract surgery.

As a general ophthalmologist, he has done 2 full day theatre lists on average per week over the last 13 years in private practice.

Most of his cases include cataract operations, posterior vitrectomy operations and retinal detachment surgery.

Although all aspects of ophthalmic surgery are covered, Dr Doubell does not perform refractive surgery.

Dr Doubell has participated in 5 different research studies and has gained surgical experience at Netcare Morecambe Bay in Royal Lancaster Infirmary, United Kingdom.

Dr Doubell also consults in Uitenhage and Graaff-Reinet.

Eye Care Awareness Week

Cataract surgeries to benefit less fortunate during Eye Care Awareness Week

In celebration of Eye Care Awareness Week 2011, the Port Elizabeth Eye and Laser Institute, in partnership with the PE Provincial hospital’s ophthalmology department, provided free cataract surgery to a select group of 24 individuals.

The Institute’s resident ophthalmologists performed cataract procedures on Saturday, 8 October 2011 at the recently re-launched Medical Forum Theatre – the Eastern Cape’s only private day hospital.
