Dr Taryn van Niekerk

Dr van Niekerk grew up in Port Elizabeth and went on to complete her undergraduate medical degree at the University in Cape Town in 2007. Her passion for Ophthalmology began in her 5th year of medical school after witnessing her first cataract operation. She was captivated by the precision of the operation and the impact it could have on patient’s lives.

After completing her internship and community service years in Johannesburg, Dr van Niekerk spent three years as a general practitioner in Balito, KZN, where she continued to take a special interest in patients with eye and skin conditions.

Keen to pursue her interest in ophthalmology, Dr van Niekerk moved closer to home and was appointed as a medical officer in opthalmology in Uitenhage Provincial Hospital where she was responsible for the eye clinic for two years. Having firmly established a love for all things
eye related, she proceeded to complete her Specialist Ophthalmology training at Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital and became a fellow of the College of Ophthalmologists of South Africa in 2021.

Dr van Niekerk treats all general eye conditions and has a special interest in cataract and eye lid surgery (ocular plastics), medical retina, glaucoma and diabetes as well as paediatric eyecare. She is known for her friendly demeanour and her passion to make a difference in every patient’s life.
